Wonsconteonach is said to mean “the river coming down from the back burnt country.” Human settlement can be traced back as far as 7,000 years or more. Indigenous groups that called the area home were drawn in by the value of the waterway. The Don River, the surrounding Valley and its many streams and trails have played a vital role in the development of Toronto and historic neighbourhoods like Riverdale.
Fred Martin is active on many Toronto based Indigenous Consultative committees and Boards.
