On the night of August 2, 1918, thousands of returned WWI veterans and Torontonians took to the streets, rioting and destroying Greek-owned businesses across the city. What sparked this violence? The Greek immigrants were targeted over a misunderstanding but it revealed a dark side to sentiments over their arrival and success in Canada. Come learn about the worst ethnic riot in Toronto’s history.

This revealing story will be presented by: Chris Grafos, research associate at the Department of History at York University and the co-founder of the Greek Canadian History Project. John Burry, documentary filmmaker who made Violent August, and Sandra Gionas, chair of the Hellenic Heritage Foundation’s project The Anti-Greek Riots Centenary.
